Paint issues
« on: March 11, 2021, 10:18:59 PM »
I tried to change some of the production displays so I could read in English instead of German.  When I saved in Paint net, I saved as dt-1, now when I open in game, the displays background went from white to all black.  I did not change the background at all, only painted over the spot with text, and placed my text in its place.  I also noticed the file size was almost cut in half of what it was originally.  So I assume dt-1 is not the correct way to save it, how should I be saving, dt-3?

I would guess either dxt 3 or dxt 5. Both are for transparency, I want to say dxt 3 preferred.

Using giants test runner it says you should use DX5 for transparent pics.

 Thx for clarifying that.

jm44807 is correct, these days DXT5 is the compression Giant's (among others) are wanting to see for all images with transparency. But... JohnDeere1952 is also (mostly) correct when he mentions DXT3 being "preferred". In the case that you describe in your post, attempting to change the signage for a production display, the image is likely using a "flat" alpha. In this case, DXT3 would sort of be the "preferred" compression and therefore it would likely be unnecessary to use DXT5 compression and the benefits thereof (ie. "gradual" transparency).

That said, I'd use DXT5 compression for transparency, not because it's "better" for what you're doing, but because for FS it would be "industry standard practise" and should still look ok in-game.
